The Mighty Sparrow, the Grenadian-Trinidadian calypso singer whose real name was Slinger Francisco, died today, Sunday, September 27, 2026, in New York. He was 91. His family said he died after a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones.
Mighty Sparrow was born in Grand Roy, Grenada, and moved to Trinidad with his family as a young child. He grew up there and became a major figure in Trinidadian calypso.
Francisco, whose 1956 hit 'Jean and Dinah' launched his calypso career.
