Cleveland Laing
Dancehall has lost one of its generals. Veteran DJ Lieutenant Stitchie, born Cleveland Laing, died in a Kingston hospital on Monday, September 28, 2026, one day before his 61st birthday.
Born in Spanish Town, St Catherine, in 1965, Stitchie was a former athlete and schoolteacher whose gift for words carried him onto Jamaica’s competitive sound-system circuit in the early 1980s. There, he honed his craft alongside Papa San, Wickerman and Major Worries.
His mainstream breakthrough came in 1986 with the witty “Wear Yuh Size,” followed by “Natty Dread.” His humour and commanding delivery made him a beloved voice in dancehall.
Stitchie had been ailing for some time. After suffering a debilitating stroke in September 2024, he received care at a private medical facility. His passing leaves dancehall mourning a remarkable talent.
