A former senior CIA official with top-secret clearance was arrested in May 2026 after the FBI found 303 gold bars worth over $40 million, about $2 million in cash, and 35 luxury watches in his Virginia home. David J. Rush had requested the gold from the agency between November 2025 and March 2026, claiming it was for "work-related expenses" — and the CIA couldn't account for where it went or what it was for. He reportedly was hired by the CIA in 2009 and stayed for 17 years, working his way up to a senior executive role. The scheme only unraveled during a routine inventory check, exposing what sources call one of the most significant financial crimes in the agency's history.
Rush allegedly fabricated nearly his entire resume — claiming to be a decorated Navy captain and Air Force test pilot — and got away with it for nearly two decades. Investigators say he also created a fake, highly classified "special access program" to funnel millions through a fraudulent government contract. A judge ruled him a flight risk and ordered him held without bail after his arrest on May 19, 2026 (the FBI raided his home the day before, May 18). His lawyer says Rush "properly obtained" the gold and never claimed it was his. The source of the gold remains unconfirmed — despite Trump citing the case to call for a Fort Knox audit.
